Becky De Oliveira, Blush and Bloom

We sat down with Becky De Oliveira, the founder and lead florist behind Toronto-based floral boutique, Blush and Bloom to talk about her nightly bedtime rituals.

Double, Queen, or King?

Queen!

Why is a good night’s sleep important to you?

I have a toddler, so waking up early to an action packed day of momming and business running means I need as much energy and rest as I can get - albeit it’s never enough!

How many hours of sleep do you get a night—or at least dream of getting?

Usually about 7-8 hrs.

Are you a dreamer?

YES!

What are your favourite flowers to have beside your bed?

Great question. I like a fragrant hyacinth but it drives my partner nuts because hello #allergies.

Do you partake in any nightly routine before settling into bed?

I do some calming exercises, always take magnesium and I have a pretty intense skincare routine I usually always follow before bed. And always to bed early!

Tell us about where the magic happens—and by magic, we mean sleep. How do you optimize your sleep environment?

I sleep in full darkness, phone always on silent/Do Not Disturb. My daughter has a sound machine that we can kind of hear from our room so there is some gentle white noise. I usually crack a window slightly to get a bit of air circulating.

If you feel a restless night coming on, is there anything you do to help get you through the night without waking?

I keep a lavender spray in my bedside table, as well as a Melatonin spray in case I feel like I am having a hard time, but typically I am so tired I’m out like a light. Again, breathing exercises usually work for me.

What kind of pillows do you use to keep your head in the clouds?

I still have yet to find a great pillow! I’ve tried everything from soft and plush to foam pillows to side sleeper specific pillows and at the moment just kind of settled on an old one that doesn’t seem to bother me, knowing I need to find the right fit (I had this one for a long time, so I know it’s ready to give up).

Last but not least, what is your number one piece of can’t-sleep-without advice?

I keep a small pillow (a sofa pillow actually) beside my bed if I am side sleeping and need to put it between my knees or just clutch in the night and I usually always use it! Something I did when pregnant and have always done since.  The Melatonin spray is a good one, and always have some water!
