Lights Out With Guest On Earth

Sleep, wake, repeat. Read all about how our friends optimize their surroundings, unwind, and relax the mind for a good night—every night.

We sat down with Jackie & Liz, the founders of Guests On Earth, sustainable, counter-worthy cleaning products, to talk about their nightly bedtime rituals.

Double, Queen, or King?

Jackie: California King.

Liz: Bah. Queen.

Why is a good night’s sleep important to you?

Jackie: It makes such a big difference to how I feel in the morning and throughout the day! I’ve only recently started to understand sleep as a key ingredient to my overall wellness and have been trying to prioritize it more.

Liz: Ya you do not want to encounter me on a bad night’s sleep. I’m cranky, my sentences lack key information, I redo things many times, and I cannot accomplish the many things that need to be accomplished. Sleep is so important to productivity and the general enjoyment of most activities.

How many hours of sleep do you get a night—or at least dream of getting?

Jackie: I dream of getting 8 but  it’s closer to 5-7, depending on if my kids sleep through the night.

Liz: I don’t have kids so I get that coveted 8 and if it's a weekend….. Up to 12.

Are you a dreamer?

Jackie: Yes! I love that I can often remember some dreams, especially when they come back to me at unexpected times. Apparently the other night I was laughing in my sleep, which is both creepy and awesome.

Liz: Yes! I actually no joke had a dream last night about Jackie and she was laughing… which is both creepy and awesome.

What’s currently on your bedside table?

Jackie: Our new Guests on Earth Dunes at Dusk candle, the Vitruvi Cloud humidifier, anywhere from 1-3 reusable water bottles, and lip balm. AND, not to be excluded, I have some kind of HEEL BALM, which makes me feel old, but you gotta care for your feet. Amiright.

Liz: Our new Guess on Earth Dunes at Dusk candle, a Google Nest Hub, giant water bottle, lip balm, hand cream. Oh and actually two really pretty Dream Catchers to watch over my sleep.

Do you partake in any nightly routine before settling into bed?

Jackie: I’m big on my dental hygiene so spend a good five minutes with my floss and electric toothbrush. Shower, then a few minutes on skincare. I spend some time winding down on my phone and then I like to listen to a podcast before falling asleep.

Liz: Skin and teeth care. But then some permutation of Duolingo Spanish, NYT crossword, Podcast, book reading, or just going straight to bed.

Tell us about where the magic happens—and by magic, we mean sleep. How do you optimize your sleep environment?

Jackie: Dark room, minimal noise, comfy pjs, nice sheets.

Liz: Dark room, cool temperature, humidifier, comfy pjs, Tuck sheets (duh).

If you feel a restless night coming on, is there anything you do to help get you through the night without waking?

Jackie: Pills! If I know I’m going to have trouble sleeping I’ll either take a melatonin or a Xanax.

Liz: Pills! Melatonin. Or oddly…. Robaxacet.

What kind of pillows do you use to keep your head in the clouds?

Jackie: I’m a soft pillow fan, or one medium to prop up a soft. Hate a hard pillow. No thanks.

Liz: Two gel pillows for my head. Two feathery soft pillows for hugging. Two large square pillows for no reason.

Last but not least, what is your number one piece of can’t-sleep-without advice?

Jackie: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Liz: It’s never as good or as bad as it seems.
